Family History Starter Guide: Recommended resources

For those new to family history and the State Library of South Australia collection, or for those needing a few tips and tricks

Recommended resources

Once you have some clues about your immediate ancestors the State Library has a range of resources which might help.

These include:

  • cemetery records
  • church records
  • directories
  • electoral rolls
  • newspapers
  • probate indexes (indexes to wills)
  • oral histories
  • photographs
  • published family history books
  • histories of districts and towns

The State Library of South Australia is a legal deposit library, so it is a legal requirement for publishers of books, and other materials published in South Australia, to supply one copy to the Library.

To find whether another researcher has written a history of your family, search the Library catalogue by choosing 'subject', then type your  family name followed by the word 'family'.

We also have many online resources, freely available to researchers visiting the Library.

Besides South Australian families, we can also help you search for interstate and overseas families.
