Introduction

The State Library of South Australia has a significant and developing amount of specialist material relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Read more about Indigenous collections and services at the State Library.

This Library Guide provides a guide to sources relating to contemporary issues and landmark events; namely the 1967 Referendum, Native Title decisions and legislation, the Reconciliation movement, the Stolen Generations and Indigenous health.

It details selected relevant published material, archival material and online resources held by or available within the State Library.

Further material can be found by searching the Library catalogue and eResources. Using the Library Catalogue provides comprehensive information on how to achieve the best results from a catalogue search, how to access full text databases, and suggestions for other resources to consult.

The Library catalogue also contains a selection of the pictorial material relating to Aboriginal Australians held by the Library. Users are advised that these records will contain names and photographs of Aboriginal people who have since died. This may cause distress to their relatives; discretion should be used when viewing them.

Library staff have compiled a number of Library Guides that bring together the most useful resources on a series of selected topics relating to Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people. View the full list here.

eResources

The State Library has a number of electronic resources that are useful for searching topics relating to Aboriginal Australia.

Some of these resources can only be accessed within the library and others can also be accessed from home by becoming a Home Access User.

These relevant databases are all available onsite and via Home Access.
