South Australia has become a multicultural society. While many Australians trace their heritage back to the United Kingdom and other English colonies; many also have roots in Europe.
This information guide outlines resources held by the State Library of South Australia that may help trace ancestors back to various European countries. It also has links to helpful websites, organisations and societies.
Listed below are resources held in the Library that look at European genealogy. To locate sources that deal with specific countries or cultures go to the appropriate orange tab above.
The Family History Collection is in the Spence Wing on Level 1.
A staff member is stationed in the area weekdays from 10am to 5pm during Library opening hours. Outside these times, assistance is available at the Information Desk. While we can show you how to use the resources, we are not able to conduct searches on your behalf. We can refer you to professional services for more extensive, personalised research.
Although the focus of the family history collection is South Australian, the State Library does hold resources to assist with overseas research. The general European resources may provide a valuable starting point for your research.
While here in the Library you may also like to join the library. Your library card will then allow you to book our computers, pay for printing and photocopies as well as allow you to have free home access to a selection of family history databases and websites.
Please note that free home access is only available to South Australian residents
