The Family History Collection is in the Spence Wing on Level 1. A staff member is stationed in the area weekdays from 10am to 5pm. Outside these hours, assistance is available at the information desk. While we can show you how to use the resources, we are not able to conduct searches on your behalf.
Although the focus of the family history collection is South Australia, the State Library does hold resources to assist with interstate and overseas research. These resources are available for use at the library.
We can also guide you through the Family History resources available on the internet.
For lengthy enquiries, you can Ask Us.
Searching from home
Until March 2012 the indexes to South Australian births, deaths and marriages were not available online.
Recently, Genealogy SA published extracts from the indexes online. The information is equivalent to indexes published online by most Australian states. Information about these and other databases can be found at the Genealogy SA website.
The full indexes are available on CDROM and available in the State Library of South Australia and other State libraries across Australia. The Library is open daily, however, if you are unable to visit, we invite you to submit a query via our Ask Us Service.
