The State Library aims to collect a complete set of these documents for South Australia and the Commonwealth.
In the first few years of the colony, gazette notices were published in the South Australian gazette and colonial register, available on microfilm at the State Library or online via Trove.
Gazettes were published separately from 1839 onwards. Hard copies are kept on open access in the Government Publications collection, and also available online.
1836-1839: Trove database and microfilm.
1839 - current: Hard copy Government Publications Collection
1839 - 1999: AustLii database (joint project of Piper Alderman and the State Library of South Australia)
1999 - current: SA Government Gazette website
An index was published annually to 1876; after which it was published half-yearly and is bound with the gazettes.
Historical gazettes (1901-2012) browsable by year, can be found on the Federal Register of Legislation. (This includes special and periodic notices)
Notices from 2013 onwards can be searched on the same site.
A range of Commonwealth Gazettes can also be searched on Trove. (Select Gazettes, then select ‘Place’, ‘National’.)
Hard copy gazettes, dating back to 1901 (‘Commonwealth of Australia gazette') can be located and requested via the State Library catalogue.
Current and past notices from the APS Employment gazette can be found online.
Online holdings for State and Territory gazettes
The State Library holds a range of interstate gazettes in hard copy, but coverage is incomplete, and varies by state. These gazettes are held offsite and can be retrieved on Mondays and Thursdays. Library staff can help you locate these records in the catalogue. More information about interstate gazettes can be found on this National Library guide.
