English Language Improvement Service

The English Language Improvement Service (ELIS) supplements other English language and literacy programs within South Australia by providing self-help materials and opportunities to improve your conversation. Our ELIS service is offered through one-on-one sessions, or our group conversation classes.

Research Guides

Compiled by the State Library of South Australia, our research guides will assist you in exploring our vast collection. You will find research assistance, subject guides, and useful resources on a range of subjects.

Getting started

The State Library of South Australia's main collecting focus is South Australian material. We also maintain a substantial general reference collection located onsite at the State Library or in our storage facilities. However, our collection material can only be used in the library and is not available to be borrowed. Whilst the library has some collection specialisations it does not hold comprehensive collections of specialist books for tertiary study subjects including nursing, accounting and business.

Are you enrolled at a private college in South Australia?

If you are enrolled with a private college here in South Australia you need to check with the college what library support services are included as part of your enrolment.

If your college does not offer any library services  the State Library can help you with the following: remote access to some electronic databases, access to general reference books, computer facilities, quiet and group study spaces that can be used during our current opening hours.

Are you a secondary student?

The State Library of South Australia has several useful resources to support your study needs. Take a look at our Research tips for students to find out how the State Library can help with your studies.

The State Library of South Australia also provide free digital education programs for secondary students. Providing instructions and guides for SACE research skills, searching the catalogue, and searching eResources.
