The State Library has the most comprehensive collection of newspapers in South Australia – with coverage for state, national and international newspapers. We have collected newspapers since the state’s first newspaper was printed in June 1836 – just prior to European settlement of South Australia. In addition the Library subscribes to a number of databases containing digital versions of newspapers.
The State Library has newspapers in every format: from original newspapers to microfilm and digital files.
The best method to search the catalogue is to search for the newspaper title + 'n' (for newspaper). e.g. search for the title Adelaide Times by typing 'Adelaide Times n'. You can also drop down and select the Magazines and newspapers category to get the most relevant results.
The latest copies of many newspapers can be found on our shelves in the library, ready to read.

Australia
Use Trove to freely access historic Australian newspapers (from 1803-). Many titles are digitised such as The Advertiser & Sunday Mail (the majority are only available until 1954 except where copyright permission has been obtained).
The National Library provides free home access to the Sydney Morning Herald Archive (1955-1995) and much more for registered users of the National Library.
Other countries
Many countries have published newspaper archives online. The State Library subscribes to Nineteenth century British Newspapers and the Times Digital Archive which can be accessed online with a State Library membership.
South Australian newspapers not in Trove or in a database will be available to view onsite in the State Library. To find out more about their formats and access conditions search the newspaper title in the catalogue or ask staff for more details.
If you are not sure what newspaper covered the area you are interested in, a list of South Australian newspapers organised by region is available here: SA Newspapers.
