Immigration to South Australia: Travel between Australian colonies (Horner and Hodge Indexes)

This State Library of South Australia guide has information on passenger lists, newspaper indexes and immigration schemes. It includes some resources about immigration to other states.

Departures for overseas 1836 to 1887 (Horner Index)

The Horner Index (created by Sally Horner) lists departures of passengers by ship from South Australia directly for overseas ports, as reported in the Register newspaper.

Interpreting the Horner Index

Each card in the index contains information as in the sample below.

You may search either for a family name or the name of a ship.

The abbreviation 'Reg.' stands for the South Australian Register newspaper, and the handwritten abbreviation 'Advt' stands for the South Australian Advertiser newspaper.

The original reference may be looked at in the newspapers on microfilm, or by a Trove search.
