Official government records can be an important source for family history information. These may include census records, electoral rolls, school records, government gazettes (and a range of other government publications), police records, naturalisation records and wills.
In South Australia the two major government archival agencies are State Records of South Australia, and the National Archives of Australia - South Australia State Office - which is located at the State Library.
However, a variety of published government records are held at the State Library, as well as a number of indexes and guides to government records:
- South Australian Police Gazette 1862-
- South Australian Government Gazette 1839-
- South Australian Parliamentary debates 1858-
- Education Gazette South Australia
- Parliamentary Papers including public service lists, departmental annual reports, etc.
- Electoral rolls 1862-2009
(Some of these publications are also available online, as noted in the catalogue records above.)
