This was a free community newspaper covering Norwood, Unley and North Adelaide.

The single sheet Adelaide aeroplane was an early free newspaper. Its title reflects the popularity of the emerging aviation industry at the time. Probably an evening newspaper, it was largely devoted to horse-racing. A regular column was titled, ‘Chapter of accidents, fatal and otherwise.’ The newspaper claimed to be non-political but took a pro-socialist stance. Each issue also contains a short story. The newspaper closed in early 1920 due to power restrictions caused by a coal crisis.

The Adelaide City Reporter was published to coincide with the 1984 Adelaide Festival of Arts. It's main intention was to provide information about the city for tourists and to generally promote Australian tourism. An interesting feature of the latter issues is a cartoon strip by Bob Dickenberg, depicting local radio personalities Barry Ion and Tony Pilkington ('Bazz and Pilko').

From 1838 printer George Dehane was a prolific newspaper printer and publisher. As the name suggests, this newspaper was largely a vehicle for advertising. It was almost certainly South Australia's first free newspaper. It contains auction notices, land sales and advertisements for such varied products as horse servicing, money-lenders and schools. The advertisements were interspersed with news of the week – largely reports of accidents and fatalities. Dehane claimed that the newspaper had a circulation of 4,000 copies per issue. The State Library of South Australia set is very incomplete.

Published largely as an advertising sheet for the land agents, C.H. Matters and co., this newspaper contains only snippets of news between its columns of advertisements. Only two issues are known to exist.

This appears to be the only issue of this staff club newspaper. It was produced for the one thousand Adelaide Tramways Trust employees in 1911. It contains cartoons of various staff by Will Nottle, who was also the editor. The introductory article is based on an interview with premier John Verran.

This newspaper was started by a group of gentlemen when the Adelaide Independent ceased. The newspaper saw itself as in competition with the South Australian Register. It claimed to be the ‘only liberal portion of the press’ in Adelaide at that time. (18 August 1842, p. 2) Dr Richard Penny ('Vox Populi') was the outspoken editor, assisted by fellow doctors Litchfield, and Edward Davy. The newspaper was unable to survive beyond eighteen months. While it lasted, the twice-weekly newspaper published strongly-worded opinions about a range of topics and people in early Adelaide. It provides a fascinating alternative press commentary. It was purchased by John Stephens as the basis for his successful Adelaide Observer newspaper.

Adelaide Express was the new title given to Adelaide's first evening newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, when it was taken over by the Advertiser. It was later named the Express and Telegraph. As an evening newspaper it contained condensed news from the columns of the morning Advertiser, and brief late news items.

James Allen of the Adelaide Times produced a handful of single issue humorous newspapers. Charles Platts, a Hindley Street bookseller, was the printer and publisher of this example. Send-ups of various well-known men including Allen himself fill its columns. Timothy Short's Journal of Passing Events, and First of April Cracker, appear to be other titles in this series . They were possibly produced as April Fool's Day jokes.

Only this single issue is known to exist, although a prospectus for the newspaper appeared in the South Australian Register on 22 March 1845, and references to the title occur through 1846.

With the demise of the Register's Port Lincoln herald George Dehane, a disgruntled ex-Register journalist, set out on his own. He produced this newspaper promoting the settlement of Port Lincoln, in the year of the infamous 'Maria massacre'. Many references to this event occur through the pages of the newspaper, which took a strong stand against the attitude of those seeking revenge on the Aboriginal people. Printing difficulties beset the newspaper, which on more than one occasion had to be printed at the office of the Southern Australian through the courtesy of its publisher, Archibald McDougall.

The Adelaide Guardian was printed by William Caddy Cox for George Milner Stephen, one time Advocate General, Acting Governor and Crown Solicitor of South Australia. Stephen's main aim was to justify his own controversial activities, particularly over the apparent false advertising of his subdivision, the 'Milner Estate' at Port Gawler. In November 1839, when he was charged with perjury over this, Stephen sold the newspaper to Cox, and Oliver K. Richardson became editor. Stephen followed Governor Hindmarsh and his family to England and then Heligoland, and married Mary Hindmarsh. Items include many early events such as the gathering of funds for a memorial to Colonel Light, and the establishment of the first Adelaide Hospital. Robert Thomas of the Register later purchased the title, re-naming it the Adelaide Chronicle. The newspaper did not survive the economic crisis of 1841-1842. The State Library holds copies of only two issues of this historic newspaper, and a photo-copy of a third issue held in the British Museum, London.

The Adelaide independent was an experimental weekly newspaper, and possibly the first illustrated newspaper in Australia. It was the brainchild of colourful early auctioneer Nathaniel Hailes. Hailes wrote for various newspapers under the pen-name ‘Timothy Short’. Its illustrations were a series of pen and ink sketches, or cartoons, as lithographed inserts. These were possibly the work of the engraver George Hamilton. Editor Hailes was the subject of several of the sketches. The newspaper was forced to close in 1841, allegedly due to the outcry caused by publishing a sketch portraying a drunken brawl between bank manager Edward Stephens and wealthy land-holder Osmond Gilles at a dinner in honour of Edward John Eyre. Hailes went on to produce the Adelaide Free Press, but unfortunately no copies of this later newspaper have survived. He was the first secretary of the South Australian Institute, forerunner to the State Library.

Shipping lists containing both names of travellers and details of cargoes, were printed in the local newspapers from the establishment of the Australian colonies. From the end of the nineteenth century specialised newspapers containing greater details of these lists, and of shipping movements generally, were published. These were sometimes published as national newspapers, including shipping details for each state.

The Adelaide Morning Chronicle was published specifically as a voice in support of state aid to churches. It was begun by the draper Andrew Murray when his previous newspaper, the South Australian, went broke. It had backing from a group of pastoralists. The newspaper particularly provided a voice for the influential Anglican section of the Adelaide community. Opposition opinions were voiced by the Non-Conformist churches in their newspaper, the Austral Examiner. The Adelaide Morning Chronicle was of a sufficient standard to be seen as competition to the South Australian Register. The newspaper ceased in early 1853 largely through the economic effects of the Victorian gold rush. Murray had left for the goldfields in September 1852 and went on to work for the Melbourne Argus, where he assisted his sister-in-law, Catherine Helen Spence, to have her work published. The plant of this newspaper was purchased by JH Barrow and a few years later used to establish his newspaper, the South Australian Advertiser.

This was a sensational weekly tabloid newspaper. Its editorials voiced strong conservative opinions in support of the White Australia policy. The newspaper also contained a large amount of sport, including horse racing, football, cricket and boxing. At least a whole page each week was devoted to articles and advertising for JC Williamson shows at the Theatre Royal, and films at Wests'. Regular historical articles concentrated on crime stories of nineteenth century South Australia. Hal Gye was the cartoonist for the newspaper

The Adelaide Observer was established by John Stephens with a country readership in mind. He also aimed for an apolitical newspaper, and this was a stance largely followed throughout the Observer’s long life. In 1845 Stephens purchased the Register, so that the Observer then became a weekly summary of the daily news reports in the Register. Many articles were simply copied from the daily title. By 1852 the Observer was printing two editions - the first an early country edition on Friday, sent to Burra and other distant places, and a second 'town edition' appeared on Saturday morning. As the rail network spread through the 1870s, the delivery of daily city newspapers to the country eroded the need for the country weekly summary. The Observer then changed its focus, becoming more of a week-end leisure newspaper. While still summarising the week's news, it included literature, a 'ladies column', agricultural articles, etc. Many of Adelaide’s earliest women journalists and aspiring writers had their work published in the Observer. This included Catherine Helen Spence, Winifred Scott and Ellen Liston. From 1902 it contained a regular four-page photographic supplement. Earlier supplements had appeared intermittently since September 1895.

This is an early version of the long running classified advertisement newspaper. The newspaper ceased in 2009 due to the rise of Internet advertising.

Only three issues of this newspaper printed by George Dehane and edited by James Allen have survived. The focus, as the title suggests is very much on railway matters, both in editorials and in news items - local and overseas. The Parliament's Corporation Bill is also given much editorial space.

Adelaide Review was founded by Mark Jamieson, with Gina Roncondi as editor. From the third issue, Christopher Pearson, the Advertiser arts editor, joined the team. He became editor in July. Under his leadership, the circulation quickly rose to 20,000 and the Review became a free newspaper. Contributors in this period included Peter Ward, Peter Goldsworthy, Lance Campbell, Michael Vanstone, John Bray, and later Federal politicians, Malcolm Latham and Tony Abbott. Restaurant reviews were contributed by Howard Twelftree. In 2003 the Spanish media entrepreneur, Javier Moll, took over Adelaide Review. In 2004 it became a fortnightly publication. From 2008 it returned to monthly publication. Margie Budich joined the Adelaide Review as an executive director in 2007, with Lachlan Colquhoun as editor.

The Adelaide Times was established by colourful James Allen on his return from England in 1848. Allen trained as a Baptist minister, but worked as a reporter in London and was associated with writers including Charles Dickens. Modelled in appearance on the London Times, with an almost identical masthead, the content of this newspaper was very different to the conservative English title. The Times was one of a handful of Adelaide newspapers to survive the effects of the 1850s Victorian gold rush. Allen took advantage of the rush by sending his son to Mount Alexander to establish a local office for the Times at the diggings, (8 May 1852, p. 3) and printed detailed reports for readers at home in South Australia. From March 1850, along with its rival, the Register, the Times pioneered daily publication, but during the gold rush it was forced to return to a weekly. From January 1853 an expanded Saturday edition of the Times was published for country readers under the title South Australian Weekly Dispatch. Julian Tenison-Woods was sub-editor at the Times between 1855 and 1856. This was before he began studying for the priesthood. In 1853 Allen sold the newspaper to an influential group of Adelaide gentlemen, but re-purchased it in 1855. These men were: Richard Hanson (Advocate General), Robert Torrens (Treasurer), George Stevenson (Coroner and former editor of the Register), John Brown (former Emigration Agent), and Edward Gwynne (lawyer and MP). (South Australian Register, 17 November 1853, p. 3) Historian Douglas Pike described the Times as, ‘an unpredictable waverer from abject support of the government to the wildest republicanism.’ (Paradise of Dissent, p. 395) The Adelaide Times closed in May 1858 due to Allen's insolvency. It was the first newspaper in Adelaide contracted to record and publish Parliamentary Hansard, a role later shared by the Register and the Advertiser.

This was the earliest in a series of newspapers containing only classified advertisements. It was published under various titles until 2009, when its advertising role was superseded by the Internet.

This newspaper was established by wealthy businessman, Rudolf Eimer when the Sudaustralische Zeitung refused to publish any views contrary to its own radical opinions. Nevertheless, Eimer's newspaper also claimed to be radical. The newspaper included in its pages reports of colonial politics, which was not always the case in the German-Australian press at the time. Wilhelm Eggers, formerly of the South Australian Register purchased the newspaper in 1855. He gave more space to overseas than local news. Like many of its 'English' contemporaries, this newspaper folded during the gold rush of the early 1850s, but was resurrected in 1853. Unfortunately the State Library holds a very incomplete set. This was the first German language newspaper to publish an entertainment supplement, Blatter fur Ernst und scherz.

The Adelaider post was the short-lived South Australian edition of the Sydney-based German language newspaper, Die Woche in Australien. The editor was Hans Flessner. The newspaper described itself as an 'independent Australian German weekly newspaper'. Its reporting included both local and world news, taking a German/Austrian slant in its overseas news reporting. Social, religious, sporting news and films are covered in its columns. General news stories ranged from a report of compensation being paid to Jewish families by the Krupp steel company to an article about nudist skaters (7 January 1960, p.8).

There was intense debate in Australia over conscription during the First World War. Twice Prime Minister Billy Hughes attempted to force the issue to be passed, but both times referendums on the issue failed. In 1917, prior to the second referendum, the local branch of the Australian Labor Party printed this newspaper

The Arab orient was produced for the South Australian Arabic community. Initially printed in Arabic, it was decided to change to English as an attempt to seek a wider readership, and also to 'halt the distortion in Australia about the Middle-East' (6 June 1979, p. 6). Largely devoted to world news, particularly focussing on news of the Arab nations, coverage was also given to local events and politics, particularly those issues which directly affected the local Arabic community.

This was a short-lived weekly newspaper, established particularly to oppose state aid to religion. It was established by experienced English journalist William Whitridge in partnership with Andrew Garran, and printed by George Dehane. Whitridge was, 'one of the most virile writers on the Register,' according to later editor William Sowden. The Austral Examiner commenced at the time of the election of South Australia's first Legislative Council. The newspaper includes general news, but its main focus is religion and politics.

The Australian Christian Commonwealth was formed in 1901, with its title reflecting the federation of the Australian colonies in that year, as well as the act of 'Methodist Union' in the previous year. Methodist Union saw the amalgamation of the Australian branches of the Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Bible Christian churches. The newspaper differed very little in content or design from its earlier title, the Christian Weekly and Methodist Journal. Throughout its history the newspaper had a series of very good editors and a tradition of being fairly open in both its religious opinions and its social commentary and discussion. During the First World War under editor Rev Octavius Lake, the newspaper strongly supported Conscription. A much different attitude was shown through the 1930s, in the lead-up to the Second World War, with support for pacifism and the right of individuals to make their own decisions about their involvement in war.

From 1995 publication moved to Sydney and Melbourne. From 2007 this newspaper became available online through the muslimsaustralia web-site.

The Australian Star was an 'independent' newspaper founded in 1878 by Henry Allerdale Grainger and William Watson. Grainger worked as a journalist in America before coming to Adelaide, and was later elected to the South Australian Parliament. He used the paper to express his views on protectionism, employer liability and restricted Chinese immigration.

Prolific early newspaper printer and publisher George Dehane produced this newspaper in partnership with editor Marcus Collisson. It consists largely of tirades against Roman Catholicism and in particular Bishop Murphy. The South Australian Register was supportive of the Roman Catholic church at the time, to the annoyance of Australiana. Only three issues of this newspaper are held by the State Library.

Donald McLeod produced this local version of the 1822 English newspaper, Bell's life in London and sporting chronicle. Unlike its interstate counterparts, Bell's life in Adelaide did not concentrate solely on sport and horse-racing, but also included general news. Journalist John Dickens was employed to provide the mining column and there were also shipping news, court reports, and country news. The newspaper folded in March 1862 due to financial constraints.

The Central Times was the title used during the 1970s by South Australia's oldest religious newspaper. This was established in 1864 as the South Australian Wesleyan Magazine. It was published by members of the Wesleyan Church, which later became the Methodist Church. In 1977 the Methodist Church joined with most Presbyterian and Congregational churches to become the Uniting Church of Australia. The historic event is recorded in this newspaper.

This was the second religious newspaper published in South Australia. Henry Hussey was the instigator. The Rev William Nicholls, Pastor Thomas Playford and Samuel Reynell were the main co-contributors. Reynell and others wrote poetry for the paper. John Howard Clark, later editor of the Register, wrote under the pen name 'Laicus'. Rev JC Woods of the Unitarian Church was another contributor, while EG Day and others wrote about Swedenborgian (New Church) beliefs. Hussey saw the latter two groups as outside of his definition of 'pure Christianity' and he introduced some lively debates into the columns of his paper. The journal struggled financially and Hussey decided to discontinue it. He later worked for the Government Printer.

John McEwin was ordained as minister of the Hindmarsh Congregational Church in 1872, and in 1878 began producing an 'undenominational religious newspaper'. The popularity of the Christian Colonist was such that in 1884 McEwin was released from his parish work to run it full-time. The newspaper supported the temperance and social purity movements, Bible instruction and prayer in public schools, as well as broader social improvements such as the working men's blocks scheme and women's suffrage. It was against the British opium trade and state aid to religion.

This was Adelaide's first religious periodical. It was largely aimed at an Anglican readership. It contains much about the contemporary debate about state aid to religion. It also includes suggested Sunday School teaching material, as well as Sunday School reports, articles about converting Jews to Christianity, and more general religious material. Reports from the Aboriginal mission at Port Lincoln also appear. The editor was Matthew Hale, the minister supervisor at the mission. Other contributors were also Anglican ministers, the Rev's Woodcock and Coombs.

City and country was the third short-lived newspaper established by land agent and politician, Ebenezer Ward, and the contents initially reflected his interest in land reform, education and agriculture. The newspaper lapsed after four months, was reinstated in a different format in January 1882, and horseracing became the main focus. The final issue was published by Charles McMullen, and contained a statement that Mr Ward had sold his interest in the newspaper and that in future it would be titled South Australian Times.

This Messenger Press title covers the Adelaide Central business area. Early journalists such as 'Ray Light' made this perhaps one of the company's more provocative titles at the time of its establishment.

David Gall was an early Adelaide printer. He published the Comet largely as an advertising medium. Concerned about the lack of employment for young men in Adelaide, Gall used the journal to promote his views on protectionism. He apparently believed this would be one means of increasing employment. While contemporaries referred to the Comet as a comic paper, only one presumed comic insert has survived.

Common Sense was a small magazine produced by journalists Theodore Argles and Frederick Banbury. The name was taken from the 1776 pamphlet by Thomas Paine which promoted American Independence. The only known issue contains interesting descriptions of the police court (a haunt of Adelaide’s reporters) and a dance at the Queen’s Head, Kermode Street, under landlady, Sarah White.

This newspaper was the official organ of the National Defence League, a conservative political group. It was run by prolific activist, Thomas Harry.

The Cricketer was published by the Register. It coincided with a game between the Australian Eleven and the South Australian Eighteen on 26-27 December 1878. It ran to three issues. Besides articles about the game, it contained many advertisements for Adelaide firms. The first issue stated, "This paper is published in honour of the return of the Australian cricketers. The publishers claim nothing original, and are indebted to several sources for the different articles." (p. 2)

This was a small political magazine produced by itinerant journalist, George Isaacs.

The Critic was a popular newspaper covering the social scene of Adelaide in the late 1890s and early twentieth century, with articles, social notes, photographs and cartoons. It also covered sport, mining, fashion and the theatre, with later issues including literary news and poetry submitted by readers. The newspaper was also the official organ of the Automobile Club of South Australia, giving coverage to early South Australian motoring.

This was a short-lived satirical journal published by EJ McAlister and FW Kennedy. Concentrating on political criticism, the journal also covered theatre reviews and horse racing.

The South Australian branch of the Labor Party took a risk in 1910 by turning its Weekly Herald into the Daily Herald. This was Australia’s first metropolitan daily Labor newspaper. Engaging with industrial issues and adopting a genuinely socialist stance, it was a stark contrast to the two relatively conservative Adelaide morning newspapers. Job printing for the trade unions helped the Herald to make ends meet, but competition from the News contributed to its eventual closure.

The Telegraph was Adelaide's first evening newspaper. Founded by the printer David Gall, it passed to experienced journalist Frederick Sinnett after one year. The title was taken from a highly successful London newspaper, the Daily Telegraph but perhaps also reflected the opening of Australia’s first public telegraph, between Adelaide and Melbourne, in July 1858. As an evening paper, and in the early period of the emerging of popular journalism, the emphasis was on summarising the news and on entertainment. The infant telegraphic network extending across Australia provided a new promptness to news delivery. The evening press came to have a strong sports focus. In 1867 the Telegraph was taken over by the Advertiser.

This is an interesting newspaper promoting the cause of Australian primary producers. It was also the organ of the Aborigines' Protection League, and contains lengthy discussions about the need for greater support for the Aboriginal people. The newspaper also espoused strong Christian and Socialist views.

The first Australian Greek newspaper was Oceanis, founded in Adelaide in 1914, but subsequently moved to Sydney. Deltion Pharoy was Adelaide's next Greek community publication, and a little longer lasting.

Taylor Martin published the German Language newspaper Hausfreund in Adelaide in 1894, out of the Register office. Only the first issue is known to exist. This contains brief South Australian, interstate and overseas news, as well as advertisements, a page of jokes, and a serial story set in the German army.

Australia's first non-English newspaper was founded in Adelaide in 1848 by Carl Kornhardt. The first issue contained both German and English text. The mineralogist Johann Menge was the first editor.

This was the newspaper of the local branch of the International Workers of the World, also known as the Industrial Workers of the World, a radical labour movement. The organisation was founded in Chicago in 1905 but by the 1920s had been hounded out of existence in America. In Australia branches continued to be active for a long period after this time.

This short lived newspaper was published for the Greek Pontian community in Adelaide. Its Greek title means ‘voice of Pontus’.

Charles Smith of the Adelaide and Port Lincoln Trading Company published this newspaper to promote land sales at Port Lincoln. Joseph Barnett was the publisher and Archibald Macdougall the printer. There were many humorous as well as more serious articles in the newspaper. Proceeds from sales were donated to charitable causes, including the establishment of the Adelaide Hospital.

This was a long running Greek community newspaper.

Ellenike Paroikia was the newspaper of the Adelaide Greek community in the early 1980s.

The Journal (originally titled Evening Journal) was established as an afternoon edition of the Register in 1869. It summarised the morning headlines and printed sports results. During the First World War the Journal was an important means of disseminating information about the conflict and published various editions, including a 'special cable edition.' The Friday edition had a particular focus on sports news. From 1923 with the creation of the News, the Journal was published only on Saturday. The Saturday edition was a larger issue with week-end reading matter, including sports and humour.

This was a short-lived weekly newspaper published during the Victorian Gold rush, out of Wiggs' Booksellers in Rundle Street. The newspaper gives much attention to the 1853 parliamentary election which led to the framing of the South Australian. Other topics discussed include Aboriginal legal rights. The newspaper believed English law did not take account of traditional Aboriginal law. Ultimately Adelaide was not large enough for the Examiner to compete with the Register or the other morning daily, the Adelaide Times. This was the first Adelaide newspaper to be corporately owned, by a group of prominent businessmen. The owners transferred their investment by purchasing the flourishing South Australian Register. (Adelaide Times, 9 July 1853, p. 2)

In 1863 the Advertiser purchased Adelaide's first evening newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, and began a new title, the Adelaide Express. This eventually became simply the Express, but varied its title at different periods. As an evening newspaper it contained condensed news from the columns of the morning Advertiser, and brief late-breaking news items. It also published the literary work of both established and budding writers and poets. Farm and Garden was founded at the suggestion of Daniel Ferguson of the South Australian Agricultural and Horticultural Society. The newspaper was published in association with the Register. It was full of articles about a range of agricultural topics, many by local experts including agricultural scientist Dr Carl Muecke, GW Francis of the Adelaide Botanical Gardens, George McEwin of Glen Ewin Estate, JF Wood of Evandale Nurseries and CA Wilson. Later the newspaper included more diverse material, such as poems by 'Ellie', a ladies' column, a literary column and a chess column. By June 1863 adverse seasons had increased the difficulty of remaining afloat and the newspaper ceased. From that time the associated Adelaide Observer newspaper included some agricultural focus.

The First of April Cracker is an April Fool's Day joke, probably produced by James Allen. It may have been part of a series of single issue annual newspapers which began with Timothy Short's Journal of Passing Events published by Nathaniel Hailes in 1847. Like a normal newspaper, the Cracker contains a shipping column, advertisements, and news items, but each is written in a satirical fashion.

This newspaper seems to have been published as a supplement to the Ukranian community's Yednist newspaper. Its aim was to expose the 'dangers' of Communism, particularly as this existed in the Soviet Union at this period.

This newspaper was published during the football season for the South Australian National Football League, by Messenger Press. The first editor was Ashley Hornsey.

In 1880 the Frearson brothers changed the title of their popular Illustrated Adelaide News to Frearson's Monthly Illustrated Adelaide News. There was also a change from the earlier conservative editorial policy and sensational reporting to a more neutral stance and an emphasis on illustrations. Frearson’s Monthly was filled with illustrations of places and buildings around South Australia, often including a coloured art supplement and also published ‘birdseye views’ of Adelaide and Port Adelaide.

Frearson's Weekly was established by the Frearson brothers in 1878 as a second illustrated newspaper. This followed the success of their Monthly Illustrated Adelaide News. The weekly was published on a Saturday. It initially took a more satirical and comic approach than the older title, filling its pages with cartoons and political comment. The first few issues included front page editorials and interesting wood-cut cartoon illustrations commenting on issues of the day.

The Free Press was an interesting but short-lived newspaper. It was one of several short-lived titles produced by the outspoken Charles Chandler, founder of the Truth newspaper (Adelaide), and author of Darkest Adelaide. It was published in the year after South Australian women achieved the right to vote, and was not in favour of the legislation change. It contains many derisive comments about women's movements and prominent individuals in these organisations. Its strongest statements however, are against prostitution, making libellous allegations about ‘old colonists,’ church members and MPs who allegedly kept mistresses and visited prostitutes. Even the short stories in the newspaper took this theme. The Free Press made unflattering comments about several well-known figures, including Catherine Helen Spence, Samuel Way and Charles Cameron Kingston.

This was essentially a literary and satirical newspaper founded by CJ Dennis with other staff of the Critic. Novelist Alice Grant Rosman wrote for the journal as 'Aunt Tabitha'. Oswald Pryor was the cartoonist.

This was produced by two Adelaide printers, Albert Molineux and Samuel Richards. The newspaper was extremely successful and in 1901 opened a Melbourne office and increased publication from monthly to weekly. It even had an international distribution. Contributors included vigneron Thomas Hardy on wine and vine growing, Henry Sewell of Payneham Nursery wrote 'gardening notes' and Otto Tepper of the South Australian Museum wrote about pests, lawn growing, and other topics. Later JG Kelly of McLaren Vale complied a vineyard notes column, and Robert Barr Smith's gardener, Carl Thybell, wrote as 'Gardener'. In May 1891 Molineux sold to William Catton Grasby, formerly headmaster of Roseworthy Agricultural College, and later an agricultural teacher at Way College. During Grasby’s editorship the journal became weekly and increased its international circulation. In 1893 lithographic and then photographic illustrations were introduced. It continued until 1940, when publication ceased due to wartime paper shortages.

Although this newspaper was a semi-official Catholic organ, it had a strained relationship with the church. When owner/editor Charles Fox was bankrupt in 1874 the newspaper passed to John Hewitt. It was originally titled the Irish Harp and Farmers' Journal. The newspaper began with the intention of focussing on news from Ireland for the Irish in South Australia.

This was the organ of the Labor and Union movement in South Australia. The newspaper contained reports of the labour organisations and political commentary. It also covered sport, literature, and the theatre. Special contributors included Catherine Helen Spence and Otto Tepper. The newspaper was so successful that in 1910 it became Australia's only daily Labour newspaper.

Under various titles the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party and its predecessors have published a newspaper since 1894.

This was a Ukranian community newspaper. Its title translates as 'concord'.

This illustrated newspaper was published by brothers Samuel and Septimus Frearson. The Frearsons were also the printers of Duncan Moodie’s comic paper, the Portonian. The introductory editorial promised more local content than the colony’s other illustrated newspaper. The editorial stance of the newspaper was initially liberal. By mid-1877 an apparent change of editor saw a shift to a more conservative political stance. From 1879 the newspaper reporting also became more sensational. This change was probably influenced by the co-publication of the more satirical Frearson’s Weekly in 1878. In 1880 the title changed from Illustrated Adelaide News to Frearson’s Monthly Illustrated Adelaide News.

This was South Australia’s first fully illustrated newspaper. As a subsidiary of the Illustrated Melbourne Post it contained predominantly Victorian news and illustrations. Local content was usually restricted to one illustration and a front page column of South Australian news. Illustrations were of a variety of subjects, including buildings, scenery, people and Aboriginal subjects. Some may have been engravings of original artwork by the paper’s founder, the amateur anthropologist William Anderson Cawthorne.

This was a title variation of the long-running official Methodist newspaper for South Australia. Its illustrations were syndicated lithographs on both religious and a variety of other subjects.

Only one issue of this sporting newspaper has survived. Sport and the theatre tended to be reported together in the 19th century.

The Independent Weekly was founded as an alternative news source to South Australia's Murdoch-owned press. Alex Kennedy was the inaugural editor. The newspaper took a strong arts focus. Since 2011 it has been published as on-line version only, Indaily.

This was an extreme left-wing newspaper published as a vehicle for the International Industrial Workers, a ‘revolutionary Labor movement.’ The first issue stated, ‘We are out to destroy the capitalist state.’ (February 1920, p. 2) Many articles discuss the Russian political situation. There is discussion about the formation of the ‘One Big Union’ and the plight of twelve IWW members sent to Long Bay Prison for a supposed arson attack in Sydney. Local news includes coverage of unrest amongst soldier settlers and unionists at Glossop Soldier Settlement. Only nine issues of the newspaper seem to have been published.

The Journal (originally titled Evening journal) was established by the Register in 1869 as an afternoon newspaper. It summarised the morning headlines and printed sports results. During the First World War the Journal was an important means of disseminating information about the conflict by publishing various editions, including a 'special cable edition.' The Friday edition had a particular focus on sports news. The Saturday edition was a larger issue with week-end reading matter, including sports and humour. The Journal was also a place where hopeful writers and poets might have their work published. In 1923 the weekday publishing rights of both the Journal and the rival Express were purchased by the newly established News. However, the separately published Saturday Journal continued until 1929, when it merged with the Advertiser’s Saturday Express to become the Express and Journal.

This newspaper was published by the school teacher Charles Drummond to support working men's movements in Adelaide, including the Eight Hours campaign. Apart from editorials supporting the labour movement, it contains two interesting columns. 'The 'bus papers' by Vulcan, and 'Irregular jottings' by A Working Man are interesting commentaries of the period. It followed in the footsteps of the earlier Labour Star, of which no copies have survived.

The Sunday Mail (originally titled the Mail) was founded in 1912 by Clarence Moody. By 1923 it had been purchased by News Limited. It developed a strong sporting focus, with an emphasis on football and horse-racing. In 1923 it was bought by News Ltd and moved to North Terrace. The popular ‘Possum’s pages’ began in 1921, followed in 1924 by the first children’s comic, May Gibbs’ ‘Bib and Bub’. After the Second World War, the Mail developed into the newspaper with which we are now familiar. Its circulation increased from an original 15,000, to 213,000 by 1962. Until 1972 the Sunday Mail was printed on Saturday nights.

This single sheet newspaper contains information describing an accident that occurred at the Adelaide Railway Station on 29 January 1923. It was probably produced by PJ McMahon, who ran a boot stall outside the railway station. The back of the sheet contains further details of the accident, as well as the results of the race meeting held the same day at Victoria Park.

This newspaper was published by William Hammond. It contained short items of Adelaide news, court reporting, horse racing and other items. It also included satire of local people and events. This was the first South Australian newspaper to make widespread use of (woodcut) illustrations in articles, cartoons and advertisements. Artist ST Gill was employed to create some of the illustrations. The newspaper has been called ‘scurrilous’ and ‘anti-religious’ (Depasquale), however it has also been described as the only newspaper of the period which appealed to the working-class population. Hammond later published a newspaper under the same title in Melbourne.

From the 1850s various individuals and groups began publishing religious newspapers and journals. The earliest denominational newspaper was the South Australian Wesleyan Magazine in 1864. Ten years later this became the Methodist Journal. The newspaper has continued under various titles until the present, and is South Australia’s longest running religious newspaper. The Methodist Journal was printed by Theophilus Carey, who left his newspaper at Mount Gambier to found the Journal. In its early years the newspaper was strongly anti-Catholic. Various prominent ministers edited the newspaper including the Rev Henry Burgess, author of the Cyclopedia of South Australia.

This was a newspaper for radio enthusiasts and listeners.

James and Fred Hales published this newspaper during a period of gold exploration in Western Australia. It was little more than a collection of prospectuses for mining ventures and a promotional tool for the brothers’ stockbroking business.

This was a publication of the Hales brothers. As well as some journalism work, the brothers were mining agents. The newspaper also covered some local horse racing.

This single issue newspaper from 1965 reads like a Prosh magazine, making fun of various situations and individuals in Adelaide. It contains mostly articles discussing music in a tongue-in-cheek manner. A front page 'article' describes Adelaide being sold to President Soekarno [sic] for a private holiday resort.

This was South Australia's first comic magazine. It was published by the colourful early newspaper man James Allen, of the Adelaide Times. Each issue contains an almanac for the month, with phases of the moon, historic dates and weather reports. The Monthly Almanac is also filled with parodies, puns, send-ups and cartoons. It includes South Australia’s first comic depiction of Aborigines, one in which Europeans are the butt of the joke. Various character types were satirised by Allen, particularly 'new chums,' who were portrayed as impractical snobs. There are derogatory references to the reporting of Allen's newspaper rivals, the South Australian Register and the South Australian Gazette and Mining Journal. Interesting business advertisements are printed on the outer coloured wrappers. The printer was Thomas Strode, an important Australian colonial newspaper man. The engraving was probably the work of Penman and Galbraith.

This small religious newspaper was the work of the gifted but unbalanced lawyer, Paris Nesbit. With his sister Agnes Benham, he was interested in the 'new thought' movement of the 1890s, with its socialism and sexual reform. Benham contributed book reviews and articles on religious topics. Poems by local and other contributors featured largely, particularly in the early years. Nesbit took a strong political stance, advocating the nationalising of the legal profession to enable access for the poor. He also suggested divorce law reform and more employment opportunities for women. The newspaper was strongly against the 'White Australia' policy. After four months Nesbit handed the editorship to the John Newton Wood, who took an interest in spiritualism and vegetarianism. The final issue discusses socialism and the Broken Hill strikes. It includes an article about effective voting by Catherine Helen Spence.

This newspaper was published for the Polish community of Adelaide. It was begun by Zygmunt Posluszny and supported by the Polish Caritas Society. Publication ceased when then editor Dr JZ Sobolewski was appointed to a position at the University of London.

This was the newspaper of the National party of South Australia, a break away group from the Labor Party. It was largely devoted to politics, but included agricultural and gardening sections, and a children's page by 'Uncle Harry'.

Nea Estia (or New Hestia) was a short-lived Greek community newspaper.

This newspaper was published by the Central Traders and Central Market Stallholders’ Associations. It was a free publication and aimed to promote city businesses located between Grote and Gouger Streets. It published advertisements, fashion articles and recipes, but reported little actual ‘news’.

‘New Adelaide’ was the name given to the section of the city around Victoria Square and Gouger Street. This included the Central Market and various stores and theatres. This newspaper was produced on behalf of the Central Traders Association. Besides covering a unique inner city district in some detail, the paper covered a range of issues that arose immediately after the First World War. These included prohibition, profiteering, setting the basic wage and the Spanish influenza epidemic.

This is the newspaper of the Uniting Church in South Australia. Through changes in format and title, this has been published continuously since 1864. It began as the journal of the Wesleyan Church prior to the formation of the Methodist Church, which in 1977 became part of the Uniting Church. Its current title is New Times. As well as religious topics. the newspaper has always had strong discussions on social issues ranging through being pro-Conscription during the First World War, supporting conscientious objection during the Second World War, and discussing homosexuality and the church in the 1990s.

This was Adelaide’s signature evening newspaper. The tabloid was founded by James Edward Davidson in 1923 through the merging two old titles, the Express and the Journal. The News was popular from the start, with a strong initial circulation. By 1953 the circulation was 160,000. After Davidson’s sudden death in London in 1930, Keith Murdoch, already owner of the Advertiser, joined the News’ Board. By 1949 he had secured a major personal share of the newspaper. His son, Rupert, joined the News in 1952. He became publisher and managing director, before selling the title to Northern Star Holdings in 1987. When it closed in 1992, the News was the last metropolitan afternoon newspaper in Australia. Many prominent journalists cut their teeth on the News.

Journalist George Isaacs produced this single issue magazine while writing plays and poems, and contributing articles to several newspapers. Isaacs usually wrote under the pen name A. Pendragon. Despite good reviews, no further issues of the magazine were published. The prohibitive cost of printing was probably the reason for the magazine's demise. The magazine contained poems, essays and short stories. Most of the content was probably by Isaacs. An interesting item is an Australian murder story, 'Who was the sixth?' by 'G.N.'. A poem by Isaacs, 'The myrtle', was later set to music. Isaacs went on to become a co-founder of the Gawler Bunyip.

The Observer was established by John Stephens with a country readership in mind. Stephens claimed it would be apolitical, and this was largely the case throughout the Observer’s long life. In 1845 Stephens also purchased the Register, and the Observer became a weekly summary of the Register’s daily news. Many articles were simply copied from the daily title. By 1852 the Observer appeared in two editions. First was an early country edition sent to Burra and other country places on Fridays. A second 'town edition' appeared on Saturday morning. As the rail network spread through the 1870s, the delivery of city newspapers to the country eroded the need for the country weekly summary and the focus of the Observer changed to week-end leisure reading. While still summarising the week's news, it included literature, a 'ladies column', agricultural articles, etc. Adelaide’s earliest women journalists and aspiring writers had work published in the Observer. This included Catherine Helen Spence, Winifred Scott and Ellen Liston. From 1902 a regular four-page photographic supplement was included. Earlier supplements had appeared intermittently since September 1895.

This was a free literary supplement published with the Adelaide Observer from 1875. The small 16 page magazine lasted for five years. Its content consisted of stories, articles, poems, puzzles, riddles and a chess section. The amount of material contributed by local writers varied, but was often as much as half of the content. The rest consisted of poems and serials copied from English and American magazines. All the items in the 'Riddler' section were contributed by local readers. Some well-known South Australians of the time were contributors. This included Catherine Helen Spence, Catherine Martin, George Wilkinson and Nathaniel Hailes. The Miscellany ceased at the end of 1879 as part of the re-vamping of the Adelaide Observer. From January 1880 the new look Saturday newspaper included an extensive literary section, still with many of the Miscellany regulars, including Atha, Maurice, G.B.W. (George Wilkinson) and Robert Bruce.

This is the only known issue of the Old Colonists' Journal, a newspaper briefly published by Walter Waite. Waite was a printer and shopkeeper in Hindley Street. It is not known how many issues of the newspaper were printed, however it was on record as being one of seven titles which ceased during the early months of 1852 through the economic effects of the Victorian gold rush (Maitland mercury, 10 April 1852, p. 3). Waite went on to become the publican of the Stag Inn on Rundle Street. The newspaper contains no local news, but consists of overseas and interstate news which were possibly syndicated items. The front page contains a handful of advertisements, including advertisements for Waite's printing office, and his 'tea, coffee and chop house.'

This was a radical political reform newspaper. In particular, its editor and supporters followed the socialist land ownership (land nationalisation) views of the American Henry George. The Hungarian Jew, Ignatius Singer, was editor, with support from a number of Adelaide’s political thinkers including Henry Taylor of the New Australia movement (and later editor of the Renmark Pioneer), the jeweller and political economist LH Berens, James Sellar of the National Reform Association, and the early country newspaper entrepreneur Lester Judell.

The word 'pasquin' refers to a lampoon, or satire, but also to criticism or protest against a government. This journal was owned and largely written (in its first two years) by Eustace Mitford. Mitford was a keen critic of Adelaide society and politics, usually through allegory. He also wrote about colonial literature, the theatre and horse-racing. Such was the admiration for his work that the journal was reprinted in London in 1882. The original journal included cartoon supplements. Three of these cartoons are held in the State Library pictorial collection.

The first Australian Greek newspaper was Oceanis, founded in Adelaide in 1914 by George Nicolaides but subsequently moved to Sydney. Deltion Pharoy was Adelaide's next Greek community publication, and a little longer lasting. It changed its title to Pharos in its last year of publication.

This short lived newspaper was published for the Greek Pontian community in Adelaide. Its Greek title means ‘voice of Pontus’.

The Pictorial Australian was the culmination of local newspaper illustration by the Frearson brothers, Septimus, Samuel and Robert. It was the last of the old-style illustrated newspapers published in South Australia. Early editions featured the work of established local artists, but by 1893 almost the entire pictorial content was photographic. By 1887 the text expanded to include columns for women and children, reflecting the move to broader newspaper audiences of the time. This innovative and lively Adelaide newspaper closed in 1895, when the surviving Frearson brother moved to Western Australia.

This newspaper was published in the interests of the Single Tax League. It promoted land ownership reforms with the intention of supporting farmers. Harry Taylor seems to have been involved in the newspaper. The Pioneer ceased with the founding of The Voice newspaper by John Medway Day, which promoted similar reforms.

This was South Australia's first country newspaper. It came into existence in 1839 for the purpose of promoting the establishment of a harbour at Port Lincoln. The first issue was printed and published in Adelaide. Seven months later the second issue was printed in a hut at Port Lincoln. The newspaper was owned by Robert Thomas, of the South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register, and printed by George Dehane as co-owner. Later Charles Smith joined the partnership. The owners hoped Port Lincoln would become the capital of South Australia. This did not eventuate and Thomas and Smith withdrew, leaving Dehane to continue the newspaper alone under the title Adelaide General Advertizer and Port Lincoln Herald. The newspaper contained articles promoting Port Lincoln, advertisements for its first businesses, and general news which included a report of the coming marriage of Queen Victoria. Only three issues are held by the State Library although at least six are known to have been published.

This was a small comic paper founded by the cartoonist Jeffery Bruer when the long-running Lantern ceased. Besides cartoons, there was some coverage of sport and the theatre, and the usual satirical/political comment found in most 19th century comic papers. Bruer initially drew the front page portraits and the main cartoon himself, while the unsigned inside double page montage of the week's events is in the style of Ambrose Dyson's work for the Critic. Quilp seems to have ceased in 1891. In 1897 Bruer was contributing cartoons for the first issues of the Critic newspaper.

Harry Craker, James Hutchison and Alfred Smith were also involved in the publication. Quiz appealed to the new, more educated readers of late nineteenth century Adelaide. It mixed political and social comment with cartoons and quips, sports and theatre reporting, and snippets of social news. The tone was light and racy, and at the proprietors twice found themselves in court for libel over less flattering reports of theatre performers. By 1898 Quiz included photographs, including sporting photographs. In 1914 Quiz combined with the Sporting Life newspaper. In its final years the journal concentrated increasingly on sports reporting, particularly horse racing.

Only one issue of William Cawthorne's illustrated newspaper is known to have survived. Cawthorne previously published the Illustrated Adelaide Post, a local version of the Illustrated Melbourne Post. His obituary claimed he was ‘the first to introduce illustrated newspapers for regular sale in the colony’ (Adelaide Observer, 2 October 1897, p. 35). The Review was largely an advertising medium for his shop, but also contained reviews of English periodicals sold by Cawthorne. The editorial contained comments on Adelaide religious happenings, in particular Bishop Shiel's denouncing of the Irish Harp during ongoing debate involving Mary MacKillop and her order of sisters.

Roma was a short-lived Italian language community newspaper. Only four issues were published.

Andrew Dungey was a Port Pirie stationer with strong political and social opinions. His particular interests were 'land nationalisation' (government ownership of land) and the principles of free-trade. Many of his beliefs were based on Henry George's theories of (Christian) Social Democracy. Dungey was a prolific writer of letters to the Port Pirie Advocate. Between 1888 and 1890 he had a regular column. His own short-lived newspaper, Roughshod, railed against the wealthy, the established churches (including the newly-founded Salvation Army) and individual politicians. Dungey espoused a system of single tax, universal voting rights, land nationalisation and unionism, with a belief in ‘the universal fatherhood and church of God.’ His unconventional ideas were part of a wider Australian political and social ferment in the 1890s.

The Sunday Mail (originally titled the Mail) was founded in 1912 by Clarence Moody. By 1923 it had been purchased by News Limited. It developed a strong sporting focus, with an emphasis on football and horse-racing. The popular ‘Possum’s pages’ began in 1921, followed in 1924 by the first children’s comic, May Gibbs’ ‘Bib and Bub’. After the Second World War, the Mail developed into the newspaper we are now familiar with. Its circulation had increased from an original 15,000, to 213,000 by 1962. Until 1972 the Sunday Mail was printed on Saturday nights.

This agricultural newspaper was a precursor to the Farmer and Grazier newspaper.

In 1863 the Advertiser purchased Adelaide's first evening newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, and began a new title, the Adelaide Express. This eventually became simply the Express, but varied its title at different periods. As an evening newspaper it contained condensed news from the columns of the morning Advertiser, and brief more recent news items. It also published the literary work of both established and budding writers and poets. In many respects the evening press came into its own during the First World War, as the telegraph for the first time was used to provide continuous updates of the conflict. Through this period Adelaide’s two evening newspapers (the Express and the Journal) published up to four editions per day. In 1923 the weekday publishing rights of both the Express and the rival Journal were purchased by the newly established News. However, the separately published Saturday Express continued until 1929, when it merged with the Register’s Saturday Journal to become the Express and Journal.

The Journal (originally titled Evening Journal) was established by the Register in 1869 as an afternoon newspaper. It summarised the morning headlines and printed sports results. It was also published as competition to the Advertiser’s evening newspaper, the Express. During the First World War the Journal was an important means of disseminating information about the conflict by publishing various editions, including a ‘special cable edition’. The Saturday edition was a larger issue with week-end reading matter, including sports and humour. The Journal was a place where hopeful writers and poets might have their work published. In 1923 the weekday publishing rights of both the Journal and the rival Express were purchased by the newly established News. However, the separately published Saturday Journal continued until 1929, when it merged with the Advertiser’s Saturday Express to become the Express and Journal.

The Saturday Mail was an offshoot of the (Sunday) Mail, published by Clarence Moody. This was one of three titles Moody founded in 1912, the third being the Sporting Mail. Early issues of the Saturday Mail were largely devoted to sport, the theatre, cinema news and short stories. The advent of the First World War saw a major change to reporting, with ongoing updates as news of events poured down the telegraph lines. In 1915 Herbert Syme took over the Mail newspapers.

This was South Australia’s second newspaper. Its aim was to provide an alternative press voice when the Register (South Australia’s first newspaper) was considered biased towards Governor Hindmarsh and his administration. The newspaper was oriented more to the pastoralists and wealthier Adelaide society than the Register. It contained frequent attacks on its rival newspapers. The South Australian lost reader support by advocating state aid to religion during the 1851 Legislative Council elections and was forced to close. The newspaper was founded and initially edited by the Crown Solicitor, Charles Mann, and supported by a long list of prominent early figures including Robert Gouger, JH Fisher and William Light. Archibald McDougall was the printer and publisher. James Allen was the second editor, followed by the draper, Andrew Murray. In 1844 the newspaper was taken over by Murray as editor/owner, and re-named the South Australian. Murray was the brother-in-law of Catherine Helen Spence, and he published her first journalistic writings in his newspaper.

This was the second newspaper founded by outspoken Ebenezer Ward. Ward’s main intention was to provide a vehicle for his political views, particularly in relation to the highly topical question of land reform. He ambitiously hoped that his newspaper might become a viable opposition to Adelaide's existing weeklies - the Observer and the Chronicle. Horse racing took up more space than any other topic, and included local, interstate and overseas races. Ward was secretary of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia and the newspaper contained many articles dealing with horticulture. From May 1869 a series by EB Heyne, the nursery proprietor, discussed trees suitable for planting in Adelaide's public spaces. Ward was previously theatre critic for the Melbourne Herald and the South Australian contained a regular 'Drama' column. There was also a column titled 'Gleanings for ladies', a mining column, and a serial story.

This newspaper was published under the patronage of the South Australian Liberal Federation.

The South Australian Advertiser was founded by the Rev. John Henry Barrow, a pastor and politician. The earliest issues were four-page productions with a large advertising content. John Langdon Bonython joined the Advertiser in the 1870s and in a short time rose to editor, and in 1893 sole proprietor of the newspaper. Through the 19th century the Advertiser and Register were major competitors. Researchers would find it useful to check reports of the same events in both titles, because there are often interesting variations. Both newspaper companies published a weekly version. The Advertiser’s weekly was the Chronicle. In 1863 the Advertiser purchased the evening Telegraph, which was renamed the Express and became the Advertiser’s afternoon tabloid. Both the Advertiser and the Register companies were sold to a consortium led by Keith Murdoch of the Melbourne Herald in 1929. In 1983 the Advertiser took control of the suburban Messenger Newspapers. The Advertiser on-line news site is Adelaide Now.

It was originally intended as weekend reading, but after the Second World War focused increasingly on rural readers and agricultural topics. It was originally intended as weekend reading, but after the Second World War focused increasingly on rural readers and agricultural topics. The women's pages of the twentieth century, written by Eleanour Barbour and Mary Broughton, were especially popular with readers.

This small newspaper was founded as an independent weekly during the difficult economic period caused by the Victorian gold rush. Regular news from the diggings appeared, as well as long reports of the first South Australian Legislative Council. The editorials contain interesting political discussions and strong criticism of the Victorian government. Reports of the first municipal councils, and a lot of sport, mostly horse racing and some cricket, was also included. The newspaper had strong connections with the licensed victuallers, so a large number of advertisements for hotels and breweries appeared, and editorials supported Sunday opening of hotels. The State Library holds a very incomplete set of the newspaper.

The newspaper’s title change reflected the founding of major mine ventures at Burra and elsewhere. The earlier spirited inter-press debate continued with this fourth major newspaper, alongside the Register, South Australian, and Adelaide Times. Stevenson ran a spirited campaign against Robert Torrens, Collector of Customs, lampooning him and alleging mismanagement and mistreatment of staff. (3 March 1849, p. 2) Torrens retaliated by attacking Stevenson in the street with a 'bludgeon'. (5 July 1849, p. 2) The newspaper was forced to close in 1852 due to the lack of labour and cash brought by the exodus of men to the Victorian goldfields. Faced with his entire staff leaving for the gold rush, Stevenson closed the newspaper and joined them.

Boxing, athletics and yachting were also well reported. The title changed along with a slight change in focus when it was renamed the South Australian Sentinel.

South Australia's first literary journal was published by the newspaper editor/owner James Allen. At the time Allen was editor of the Southern Australian. Later he owned the South Australian Register and Adelaide Times newspapers. He published several small journals. The South Australian Magazine was arguably the best of these. Later it was edited by Thomas Young Cotter.

This was the journal of the South Australian Methodist church. Through changes in format and title, this has been published continuously since 1864. Its current title is New Times. As well as religious topics. the newspaper has always had strong discussions on social issues ranging through being pro-Conscription during the First World War, supporting conscientious objection during the Second World War, and discussing homosexuality and the church in the 1990s.

The State Library has only a printed prospectus for this title. It seems to have been published as a supplement to the Register newspaper, by editor/owner James Allen. The intent was to summarise news from the young colony for sending home to Europe. It was probably simply a version of Allen's earlier South Australian News Letter. The practice of providing news specifically for British readers continued by printing monthly summaries in the Register until 1900.

This was one of the many publications of the entrepreneurial James Allen, editor of the Southern Australian and later owner/editor of the South Australian Register and finally the Adelaide Times. This newsletter aimed to present a summary of South Australian events and describe the progress of the colony for settlers to send home to friends and relatives in England. It largely consisted of statistical information, and included at least one blank page so that senders could include a letter to the recipient.

This magazine was largely for members of the Odd Fellows Lodge, proceeds went towards their fund for widows and orphans. As well as news for members it included literary contributions and scientific and other articles.

The Satirist attempted to compete with Adelaide’s two dailies, the Register and the Advertiser. The newspaper was produced by George Massey Allen. It covered parliamentary doings, literature, sport and the theatre. Popular readership was sought through reports of local, interstate and overseas horse races. Using his former country connections, Allen published reports of country correspondents from Kapunda, Angaston, Nuriootpa, Gawler and Mount Pleasant. From January 1868 a serial, ‘The shoemaker of Adelaide’ appeared, describing the antics of a practical joker. But his sarcasm about the Angaston Baptists, and dissenting churches generally, did not help his readership. Allen was often side-tracked into biting sarcasm about public figures and other newspapers. The issue of 29 February 1868, under ‘Scoundrels unmasked’ described in elaborate metaphor alleged illegal actions of the government receiver, John Cherry. The allegation saw Allen sentenced to a year in jail with hard labour, and a fine of one hundred pounds, bringing an end to the Satirist. (Advertiser, 23 May 1868, p. 7)

This was a newspaper for Adelaide's Scottish community.

Horse racing, cricket and football were the main sports covered. Boxing, athletics and yachting were also well reported.

This was a short-lived newspaper published for members of the South Australian Catholic Church. It followed the closure of the controversial Irish Harp. The State Library set of this newspaper is incomplete.

This newspaper was a continuation of City and Country. To begin with the newspaper focused mainly on sports and politics. Lengthy sports reports focused on early football. Theatre news was also included. Politically, the editor was outspoken against the government of Thomas Playford senior. In 1884 the topic of spiritualism was raised in letters and articles in the newspaper. Editor George Barrow was a believer in the phenomena and a heated correspondence between the musician Christian Reimers (a spiritualist), and Kirkham Evans of the YMCA (a sceptic) took place. Many readers joined the debate, and the newspaper had to print extra pages to accommodate the letters received. In July 1885 when Barrow published an article suggesting that Samuel Tomkinson MP was making money from corrupt land deals, he was charged with libel and sentenced to six months in jail. (South Australian Register, 16 October 1885, p. 7) The newspaper apparently ceased at the end of 1885.

This was the first Catholic journal published in South Australia. The Rev Julian Tenison-Woods was the editor. The aim was to provide Catholic news from Europe, as well as local news. A particular concern was the implications of the 1851 Education Act which had ended earlier funding for churches and church schools. When the Southern Cross closed, some of its coverage was taken over by the pre-existing Irish Harp.

This was an outspoken mid-week newspaper published in association with the South Australian Register. It was largely a vehicle for a vehement attack by editor/owner James Allen on the young governor, George Grey. The colony was in the midst of financial crisis, forcing Grey to extend the spending cuts begun under Governor Gawler. Many of Grey's actions were deserving of criticism but Allen hoped for Grey's removal from office. His description of a fictional ‘commission’ ruling that Grey be removed, must have caused readers in both Adelaide and London to wonder whether the event had actually happened. (26 October 1842, p. 3-4) Apart from the focus on Grey, there are news items including overseas news, and advertisements for other publications by James Allen, including his almanacs, and South Australian Magazine. There are also references to other early Adelaide newspapers in response to their criticism of Allen's publications.

Only two incomplete issues of the Southern Star newspaper have survived, although four are known to have been published. It is difficult to know what the intention of the newspaper was, but coloured cartoons by G. Illman depict prominent figures including Premier Charles Cameron Kingston and Chief Justice Samuel Way. The 1890s was a period of political and social change in Australia, some of which is reflected in the Star, including the issue of unemployment. Insolvency records show the Southern Star was established by a Victorian, John Henderson, who induced would-be employees to pay deposits as guarantees of their readiness to work for the newspaper. Not surprisingly, the newspaper was not financially viable.

Initially the Sport covered a variety of sporting events, but after the Second World war it concentrated on horse racing. Early issues contain photographs of teams and events. Publication was suspended between 1941 and 1946 due to the effects of the war. For a time from 1938 the newspaper was published by Sport Radio Press. Between 1924 and 1931 the Northern Sportsman was published as an edition of the newspaper for readers in Golden Grove, Port Augusta, Kadina, etc.

This newspaper was principally for horse racing enthusiasts. It covered both local and interstate races and publicised coming meets. A variety of other sports were also covered, and occasional theatre and film reviews. It appeared twice weekly under proprietors Harry Craker and William Wedd. A number of writers provided reports about local sports. Marcus Waldrene, writing as 'Tiresias' and 'Lancer', was the major contributor to the horse racing columns until his death in 1915. At the time he was perhaps the best known sports reporter in Adelaide. From early 1914 the newspaper was amalgamated with the satirical newspaper Quiz.

In 1912 Clarence Moody founded three newspapers in Adelaide: the (Sunday) Mail, the Saturday Mail, and the Sporting Mail. The Sporting Mail ceased with the outbreak of the First World War, while its companion newspapers were overtaken with copious war reporting.

This was a publication for the South Australian Anglican Church by Fred Banbury.

A.G. Hales, known world-wide as 'Smiler' the war correspondent and detective novelist, initially ran various small newspapers in Adelaide with his brothers. His first was the Standard. The four-page newspaper consisted largely of sport, particularly horse racing. Only two issues are held by the State Library. The newspaper seems to have been taken over by James and Fred Hales who changed the name to the Mining Review, and eventually the Mining Standard.

This early literary magazine was published by John Stephens of the Register newspaper. Police Trooper George Hamilton was a contributor to this journal.

The Stock Journal began in 1904 as the Adelaide Stock and Station Journal. It concentrated on market reports and advertising. During the 1920s the journal expanded its coverage to include some political and social comment, as well as agricultural subjects. It was in this period that a series of articles about ‘Pastoral Pioneers’ was contributed by the Advertiser journalist Rodney Cockburn, which were later published in two volumes. The Stock Journal is now owned by Fairfax Media.

This was a free community newspaper published by the Box Factory for Adelaide residents.

From October 1953 the Advertiser published a Sunday edition. Eventually it was merged with the older Sunday Mail. The coverage was similar to that of the Sunday Mail, with plenty of space given to sport, sections on gardening, social pages (including several pages of photographs), a children's page, and comics. Max Fatchen wrote a column for the back page.

The Sunday Mail (originally titled the Mail) was established by Clarence Moody, in conjunction with the Sporting Mail and Saturday Mail. In May 1923 News Ltd purchased the Mail and moved the newspaper to North Terrace. The Mail had a strong sporting focus, publishing week-end sporting results. Motoring was a feature of the newspaper from the 1920s, as was the advent of commercial radio and aviation. An early focus was given to football and horse-racing, with many fine sporting photographs and articles. 'Possum's Pages' began in 1921, with the first children's comic, May Gibbs' Bib and Bub, added in 1924. This was joined by Ginger Meggs in 1932. Although published as a newspaper for Sunday reading, the Mail was actually printed on Saturday nights until Sunday 5 November 1972. Initially two editions were published, a 'street' edition at 7 pm, followed by a midnight edition which was sold later in the evening and distributed throughout the state on Sunday mornings. Until 1957 the State Library collected only the midnight edition. Country and other sporting results typically appear in the midnight or 'state' edition.

Only one issue of Adelaide's first Sunday newspaper is known to exist. The newspaper planned to be published monthly and ‘advocate the claims of our manufacturers ...’ (p. 1) It was a broadsheet published by W. Stephens in conjunction with the Weekly News. The content was largely horse racing and other sports news. It also contained photographs of Queen Alexandra, and local scenery. Newspapers such as this were largely published as Sunday reading for workers.

Truth was composed largely of grisly and sensational tales sifted from court rooms and police stations. Descriptions of murders and seductions filed its pages. It also gave good coverage to horse racing. It went through various incarnations from the first Adelaide edition published by Joseph Wharton in 1890. Issues of the Melbourne Truth marked 'Adelaide edition' exist for 1916 and 1917. These issues were published by Harold Gray for John Norton of the Sydney Truth. All the advertisements in the Adelaide editions are for Melbourne businesses. Similarly, almost all of the news content is Melbourne-based. In 1925 a 'South Australian edition' of Truth was published by Joseph Aloysius Patrick Hayes for Norton's company. A single 1934 issue of Truth names the publisher as James Glennon Geohagen, for Truth and Sportsman, Melbourne. The longest continuous run of a South Australian edition of Truth covers the Second World War and post war period. The newspaper was still published by James Geohagen as an off-shoot of the Melbourne Truth. It also was filled with scandal and horse racing. Towards the end of its life the South Australian Truth gave more space to stories of the rich and famous, and enlarged its coverage of local horse racing and football. The Truth at this time became popular for its bikini girl photographs. The Melbourne Truth finally finished in 1994, thirty years after the last South Australian edition was published.

This was Adelaide's longest running Greek community newspaper.

This was Adelaide's first evening newspaper. It was founded by the printer David Gall, passing to journalist Frederick Sinnett after one year. The title was based on a highly successful London newspaper, and reflected the revolution in reporting brought by the opening of Australia’s first public telegraph, between Adelaide and Melbourne, in July 1858. As an evening paper in the period which saw the emergence of popular journalism, the emphasis was on summarising the news, and on entertainment. The evening press also came to have a strong sports focus. In 1867 the Telegraph was taken over by the Advertiser and renamed the Express.

This was a short-lived ultra-conservative political journal. Abraham Davis was the publisher and created much comment during its two-year life. Davis was opposed to South Australia's democratic government, universal suffrage and the secret ballot. Adelaide's two daily newspapers lampooned their new ‘adversary’, "The policy of our contemporary is out of date and impracticable." (South Australian Advertiser, 7 January 1860, p. 2-3) Davis was also accused of being prejudiced against the working classes. (Thursday Review, 5 January 1860, p. 3) Apart from political comment, the most regular feature was poetry. A number of local poets had work published in the journal, in particular 'Ellie' (Ellen Debney).

Adelaide bookseller Charles Platts published this satirical newspaper. The text was probably by Nathaniel Hailes, a well-known auctioneer who used the pen name 'Timothy Short'. The humour in the newspaper consists mostly of puns. The usual newspaper columns including an editorial, shipping column, courts, proceedings in parliament, letters to the editor and advertisements are all composed in a satirical style. The Burra mines, defence and a recent agricultural show are topical items which are mentioned. It is possible that two later newspapers published by James Allen were inspired by this title. These are titled: Adelaide Gazette Extraordinary, and First of April Cracker. No other issues of the newspaper have survived, if published.

This was an advertising newspaper published by John Northmore, a partner with Horace Dean in the drapery business of Northmore & Dean. It contained large advertisements for the firm and other city businesses. Northmore's obituary claimed, his ‘advertising ... was of a novel and somewhat sensational character.’ (South Australian Register, 9 June 1891, p. 3) He was also the author of ‘fluent and trenchant letters on political and other subjects,’ to Adelaide newspapers’ (ibid) His newspaper contained insightful criticism of local politics, and regular letters by ‘Tommy Rough’ commenting on topics such as Chinese immigration, which the author was strongly against. Northmore was known for his verse and anonymous poems in the newspaper may have been by him. The Library holds an incomplete set of the newspaper which probably ran for three years. The final issue announces the dissolution of Northmore and Dean's partnership. (15 October 1879, p. 1)

This was the last title in a series of newspapers containing only classified advertisements which began in 1968. Its advertising role was superseded by the Internet in 2009.

This newspaper was published by George Howell for the South Australian Branch of the Independent Order of Good Templars. The order was established in Adelaide in 1872 by journalist Edwin Derrington. Apart from its fellowship and mutual support aspects, the Good Templars also promoted abstinence from alcohol. Articles in the newspaper discuss this and the work of the various branches across South Australia. There are also reports of the Independent Order of Rechabites and other lodges. 'Agnes Neale' (Caroline Agnes Leane), a well-known local writer, provided a serial story for the newspaper about the affects of drinking. The Tribune appears to have been a continuation of an earlier newspaper, the South Australian Templar.

Truth was composed largely of grisly and sensational tales sifted from court rooms and police stations. Descriptions of murders and seductions filed its pages. It also gave good coverage to horse racing. It went through various incarnations from the first Adelaide edition published by Joseph Wharton in 1890. Issues of the Melbourne Truth marked 'Adelaide edition' exist for 1916 and 1917. These issues were published by Harold Gray for John Norton of the Sydney Truth. All the advertisements in the Adelaide editions are for Melbourne businesses. Similarly, almost all of the news content is Melbourne-based. In 1925 a 'South Australian edition' of Truth was published by Joseph Aloysius Patrick Hayes for Norton's company. A single 1934 issue of Truth names the publisher as James Glennon Geohagen, for Truth and Sportsman, Melbourne. The longest continuous run of a South Australian edition of Truth covers the Second World War and post war period. The newspaper was still published by James Geohagen as an off-shoot of the Melbourne Truth. It also was filled with scandal and horse racing. Towards the end of its life the South Australian Truth gave more space to stories of the rich and famous, and enlarged its coverage of local horse racing and football. The Truth at this time became popular for its bikini girl photographs. The Melbourne Truth finally finished in 1994, thirty years after the last South Australian edition was published.

Truth and Progress was the newspaper of the South Australian Baptist Church. Its first editors were the Rev John Price and the Rev Silas Mead.

The Turf Review was published weekly through the 1930s as a guide for horse racing enthusiasts. The publisher was Samuel Mander. Only a few issues from 1937 are held in the State Library.

The Voice was described as a ‘democratic newspaper’. The editor was John Medway Day, who had previously been a Baptist minister at Kapunda, and left the church to work in journalism. The newspaper focussed on many of the political and social discussions of the time such as single taxation and land nationalisation. It also included coverage of the New Australia movement, the group of idealists who set out to establish a Utopian settlement in Paraguay.

This short lived newspaper was published for the Greek Pontian community in Adelaide. Its Greek title is E Phone Toy Pontoy.

The War Cry was the newspaper of the Salvation Army in Australia. This was a national journal, but an Adelaide edition was published in some years between 1883 and 1898.

This weekly newspaper was published by James Allen as an adjunct to the Adelaide Times. Both newspapers closed through Allen’s bankruptcy in 1858. Very few issues of the Weekly Dispatch are held in the State Library.

This was a landmark newspaper, rooted in the Labor movement of the 1890s. It partially continued J. Medway Day’s The Voice. The Herald under editor William Wedd discussed working-class rights, the mix of politics and religion, women's rights and unionism. The New Australia scheme in Paraguay, the ‘Adelaide Hospital Row’ and the establishment of village settlements were matters written about at length. Catherine Helen Spence, feminist and reformer, wrote for the Herald, as did the naturalist JGO Tepper, and Lucy Morice, niece of Catherine Spence, briefly edited the women's column. Sports, drama, music and literature were included in its coverage. An interesting serial story described the heroine being rejected by her lover due to her labour involvements. The newspaper was obviously a success, moving to daily production in 1910 as the Daily Herald.

The Weekly Mail was published by Frederick Sinnett as an adjunct of his daily Telegraph, Adelaide's first evening paper. Only two issues are known to have survived. These contain the usual news items - in particular a large section of court reports, as well as advertisements and editorial comment. A serial by Catherine Helen Spence, ‘Uphill work’ was later published in this newspaper. The 16 May 1863 issue contains an article expressing concern about the projected cost of building the Adelaide Town Hall, and an editorial against spending money on gas-light decorations to celebrate the marriage of the Prince of Wales.

This newspaper was published by auctioneer and printer Caleb Gurr.

The Weekly Trading Post, under various titles, was a popular source of classified advertisements, concentrating on secondhand goods, for forty years. It was overtaken by the Internet.

The Workers' Weekly Herald was the newspaper of the South Australian Labor movement. It has existed under various titles at different times.
